Ok guys, I'm not sure what's going on here.

About three weeks ago my hard drive started to make ticking sounds. The next week, when I went to play Battlefield 2, my computer suddenly turn off after about three seconds of being in a match and I couldn't turn it back on unless I unplugged the power cord. I opened up Everest just for fun right now only to find that my CPU has a fluxing temp of more the 50 degrees in maybe two seconds. 7C one seconds, 54C the next. Sometimes it even vanishes from the list  ! I have no clue what's going on here. I still can't play Battlefield 2 without the computer shutting it's self down but the hard drive ticking is gone now.

I'm pretty sure it's not infected. I use avast! and CCleaner a lot. Nothing on my system is OCed.

Ideas? Suggestions?

make sure ur hsf is seated properly and the fan or heatsink isnt gummed up with a bunch of dust, also u say it jumps from 7c to 54c u think maybe its cuz ur turning it right back which the cpu wouldnt cool completely off, what maybe would help us is what it used to idle at temp wise and what the temp was at load. hdd clicking and not clicking i believe is a sign of ur hdd goin bad, once u hear that click is when id start backing everything up, and another possibility maybe a psu failure what power supply are u using

It's pretty clean in there, I just use canned air a few days ago. Also sure thats seated right. I'm not sure of the idle temp though since this is really the first time I'm looking at all this stuff. What I can tell you though is that its six years old and a CeleronD (345) 478 Socket 3.06GHz. This is the first time I've ever seen or noticed something wrong. But it could of been happening all along since this is the first time I'm looking at my computer's stats.

Also, shouldn't the CPU stop fluxing after awhile if it was something with not letting it cool down before turning the computer on again? I haven't seen it go below 2C yet.

I already have backed them up. As for the psu, it's also a six year old 250w. This computer is a... Compaq. I know, they are bad, but it was six years ago when I got it.. I didn't know.

Well I know it doesn't have to do with rebooting before the CPU has time to cool off now. I had it turned off over night. Turned it on this morning and checked, still fluxing. The PSU seems fine since the volts hardly move.. maybe 0.05+- at most.

I have zero clue why a CPU would be suspect. Your CPU is fine. A ticking/clicking HDD is the *primary* symptom of a Drive that is Failing. Back up your personal files NOW (seriously, stop reading this Post and do it). Once you install a new Drive and have everything laoded up, things will be fine.
