ok so the comp i have currently is the one on my sig, for now i basically want to upgrade the processor and memory, which of course would involve a new motherboard. I will then upgrade the gfx card in the near future to compliment it, but for now i want to get the backbone of the computer sorted first.

I was looking at i7's but they are so expensive, so im looking down the budget route of AMD, what processor out there is the equivalent performance wise to an i7 ?

What is the primary function? You will likely not even need an i7.

i do quite a few things, im an average gamer but i do like my graphics :)

But thing i really need a fast processor for is livestreaming, i livestream from my xbox using a HDPVR on twitch.tv and my current rig just cant handle it, i have to use the wifes i7 laptop to stream.

I also run a business from my desktop, which involves having quite alot of internet tabs open, aswell as a couple of excel docs and a couple of word docs all at the same time.

I also trade the markets so i always have the live price panels on my desktop also, aswell as the usual skype and things.

I would say you should be good with a i5-3570k and overclock it to 4.4GHz or so. The add-on of Hyperthreading adds little performance at all to an i7.

IPC. Passmark is heavily multithreaded. The FX line is meant to take advantage of multithreading. The Phenom destroys it in single threaded performance, as do all intel chips. The multithreaded performance will not help you a lot, as you are using a lot of single threaded programs.

TBH, ... go with a i5/i7, maybe more expensive but the performance difference (in my opinion) is totally worth it, not only do the i5/i7 have close enough multithreaded but there single threaded is twice as fast if not more compared to the amd processors.

if you go the amd route, you will most likely regret it in the near future. (like I did)
