Ok i've decided to reconsider my options for a computer build.

I made a post on here a week or so ago and posted a list, but I think i've changed my mind on what I really want. I think i'm going to switch from a 6 core AMD processor to a 6 core Intel. My budget WAS around $1000. But now i'm raising it to $2000 (hopefully lower but 2000 is my absolute limit). I was hoping I could get some help picking some stuff out. I like to do a lot of gaming and music recording and I will use this computer for both. Also need to include a monitor. Mouse, keyboard, speakers can all come later as I have some now. But if you can do it for under 2k please go for it :)

For what will you be using your computer.
If its gaming then the Intel Hex core is a complete waste of money.
And if its Casual Video editing even then until and unless its something proffessional then I would avoid the gulftown.

Really? I was thinking the more processors the better. Music recording, all the plugins and VST's are heavy on the computer. Is there a motherboard out there that will take a quad chip and later on I can upgrade to a hex without buying a new mobo? Probably a really stupid question.

AM3 motherboards will take amd quad and hex chip.
x58(1366) motherboards will take a intel hex and quad chips.

Please explain your actual purpose of the computer and we might be able to brew something up for you.

Running DAW's more specifically Cubase 5 with Superior Drummer 2.0 + updates countless VST plug-ins, gaming. I have a home studio (sort of) that my computer can't handle, I do all my recording digitally. Having a slow computer that crashes every 10 seconds because my sound card doesn't agree with my video card is not something I look for. I'm not a professional by any means, I just want to play games and make music.

The AMD hex-core will be enough for that.Or even the Intel Sandy Bridge i7 2600k.

Both will work really nicely.As for GPU a GTX570 will be way more than enough.
 
I think any dual core Intel or Athlon 64 set up should work fine with those music applications. I'm upgrading to dual, from single core... I just need a new processor for the new/ 2nd hand Mobo to work. I don't use Cubase (I happen to use FL Studio for audio creation) but with a mere 2GB of RAM, I find the system handles the software, plus a plethora of 3rd party plugins very well. Yes, it could be faster... but you know I'm saying.

I've been using the E=MU 0404 internal/ card interface with an ATI Saphire graphics card. I believe the point of a good ASIO interface, is that it doesn't (or shouldn't) interfere with your graphics engine and naturally bypasses the Windows Wave system found on most integrated boards.

It might be that sheer processing power may not be the only problem with your present system but more to do with the mixture of hardware used. I think most users of external audio IOs report significantly less botheration in this area.

The conventional wisdom for a smooth-running DAW is dedicated hardware. If you can dedicate one machine to the DAW duty (or at least a dual-booting affair) - with no internet access whatsoever, you might find that you can get away with not having the latest specs in hardware.

Bundling hardware together and expecting it to be reliable for a mutitude of tasks may seem possible in theory - but in practice - it doesn't always work quite as well as we'd like it to. The use of dedicated hardware has long been a form of standard practice for serious musicians and recordists for a very good reason.

For gaming, you could put together whatever hardcore, quadcore, ass-kicking, death-metal-rocking Windows-based system you prefer then for your music recording, perhaps, for instance: a used Mac G4 or dual-core Intel system, running a 'lite version' of Pro-Tools and a decent external firewire sound IO - might do you very nicely. Or Cubase - or whatever you prefer.

I really don't know exactly how practical this would be for you but as a rough guide to a principle... and it's just the way I'm going, which I'm quite hopeful about.

I was planning on doing this. The machine i'm using now is a dual core athlon something or other. Eventually I was going to upgrade the entire machine (for now I want to build another one) and use it kind of like you said. But until fix the problems on this one I will be using the new one i'm going to build for both tasks.

I also have an E-MU. But it's a 1616m PCIe with a 1010 internal card, the thing interferes with my graphics card and locks my entire computer up. I use Ge-Force 7900gs KO or something like that. It would be really nice if I could get it to work but I just feel like I need to start fresh. I have the money to burn and I want to get stuff moving!
