im looking to set up a webserver, and a shoutcast server (internet radio)
radio will be for a site, were djs go on and off as they please, or are requested
and the site will be for that radio

its a compaq proliant 1600
2 pentium 3 550mhz
20gb scsi drive
cd drive
384 ecc ram ( i have a 2 sticks of 128 from my old computer )
networking
and a 34mb nvidia 3 video card

Also im wondering if it would be possible to leave one pentium 3 at 550,
and put in my pentium 3 933mhz from my old computer??

would it be good for my needs, and also depending on outputs of the video card, and if it has agp would it be ok to run the webserver, watch a movie on tv from it, and the radio?
or what alternatives, this would cost me around 100$ canadian and im interested because its 2 cpus and ive never had that before

A single 550MHz would probably do just fine. Processors do have to be identical, though, so you can't mix and match.

The price doesn't seem bad(though I don't know the USD amount right off) but you don't need a "REAL" server things online unless you REALLY think it's going to be loaded down. I mean I used a K6-2 533 as a server once(it's actually about the same speed as a PII 350!) and it never gave me a problem with anything I did... PHP, mySQL, VNC, etc...

well, then i would just use my one computer, but motherboard is dead, and only working spare hardrive is a 1.8 from a pentium 1 that is really loud.

so i think ill get this
how can i find if its slot format, or pin
because my 933 is pin

if its pin, i probably will try to find another pentium 3 933
i dunno

i have a laptop which is what I use, and i feel bad letting my nice lcd just sit there doing nothing, and i miss playing movies on my tv from computer :(

*sorry about double post aswell*

so
i would have set it up plug it into my stereo, monitor and tv
i dunno the shoutcast, is that pretty hard on it?

Also i read that I need windows xp pro to utilize the 2 cpus, which it says it comes with but it only says windows xp
so if not id have to use stupid windows 2000 pro :(

It's probably a slot processor... You might be able to find some specs on the web about the computer and it's motherboard settings/layout.

Yeah, a laptop isn't a good choice for a server. They aren't made to run all the time.

I've never tried Shoutcast as a server, but I don't think it would be TOO difficult on it. It really depends how many connections you have going.

2000 or XP, yes, for 2 processors. 2000 would work just fine and I'd actually reccomend it for that system. No reason to go beyond. Less resources too.
