basically i just reinstalled windows and i installed the drivers (actually installed my gigabyte 965g DS3 motherboard) and so far so good booted it a couple times and updated windows (x64) and then suddenly the mouse stops working! a little more investigation tells me that the USB ports arent working properly. any ideas on what i ought to do? i tried searching for usb drivers online but the windows server claims theres no better driver for my hardware.

also note: the usb root hub seems to be messed up (hardware is not working properly!) and it says that for each and every port. any help is much appreciated!

For a usb mouse you should have a PS/2 adapter that came with it for plugging it in there. Lately in XP the MS model suddenly is no longer being properly detected when trying to assign the buttons. In Vista it still works as usual. But I simply have to buy a replacement adapter due to wear.

If you have everything going through a hub even the mouse the use of an adapter or simply plugging it directly into a free port should see that corrected. Windows doesn't look for a mouse on a hub as a rule. Until you correct the problem with the usb ports being out the PS/2 adapter is the choice for the moment however.

The reinstallation itself may and most likely saw a bad install maybe from a drive needing a lens cleaner or just needing a second install to see everything go on like it should. Sometimes to see a good working copy of Windows again when reinstalling there's simply a need to delete the primary and create a new one for a fresh start. Is that a 64bit edition of Vista?

Plug in a PS/2 mouse or use a PS/2 adaptor. Go into your device manager and right click on the USBs and click uninstall and reboot windows and let it reinstall the drivers. See if that brings them back. You uninstall the Controller or the Hub first( cant remember right off) and most of the time the other goes with it. You might have to update the driver for your 2.0 but most of the time it does it right off.

@ stranglehold - thanks. your idea didnt work at first but once i plugged the mouse it windows threw the drivers right in there and they started working again. WEIRD! this problem is certainly out of the ordinary! lol
