So I got my new hard drive (Iomega Minimax 500) formatted and ready to go. Its plugged in via firewire and went to transfer a movie to it and noticed it said it was going to take 25 minutes. I waited to see if it would change and sure enough, it stayed constant with the speed. So out of curiosity, I sent the same movie to my 80 gig hdd which is plugged in USB 2.0 and finished in about 3 minutes! How is the fireport slower than usb? There is a switch on the back of the Iomega that says either auto or 1394a. It is on the 1392a switch right now and also there is a setting to control the fan which is set to A-H but i can flip them down to M-L. whats up with this?

How large was the movie file?

As I said in another thread, it depends which version of Firewire you have. The two most common types are 400/800.

Ok I installed it using USB and it sped up. Switched the HDD to auto dont know what the switch does.

UPDATE** Ok figured out how the switch worked. USB- wrote to the disk at 18.5 Mb/s, using firewire it wrote at 20.7. Guess I just wasnt being patient enough or something

It sounds like you have FireWire 400, which is the more common type. Even though USB transfers at 480Mbps, FireWire is more stable when it comes to speeds.
