If I buy I pre-owned computer, delete the exising partition, and reisntall a completely new operating system in the free space, shouldn't the computer now work like new?:) Thank you.

Yes.

Just make sure the computer fits the system requirements, and that you are doing it legally. :)

yeah, have a serial key on hand, when i put winxp pro on mine i couldnt find the serial key and had to go through a long process for them to give me a new one, by long i mine over an hour

Of course I wanna do it legally *wink, wink* . Just kidding, I actually want to just install a linux distribution on a another computer, since I don't really want to bother with partioning my existing hard drive and having two OS's on it. And with that I've got another question: If I have two different operating systems on a single hard drive, isn't the memory for each cut in half- reducing performance? Thank you again :)

It is very very hard to have 2 operating systems on a single partition, if that is what you are talking about. On a single hard drive is fine. And no, the memory isn't cut in half, because you are only running one at a time.

And you don't need to reformat to install linux, most actually come as live CDs

No, I meant on two seperate partitions. And I also meant the hard drive space being cut in half, not the memory, sorry...and thanks. : )
