Old computer, new Vid card

Hello everyone,

I have an old HP Compaq dc5800 microtower computer (Core 2 duo system) I normally use for internet and movies. (Video card was upgraded some years ago to use HDMI to TV)

but I notice there's several problems these days.

1. I got a new TV and it doesn't look like it can support full 1080P on a 55" screen.
2. When I download and watch 1080P movies in MKV or AVI files it lags.. doesn't lag for 720P though.
3. I started playing Diablo3 on lowest setting but still getting nasty lags.

I know it would be simple to just get a new computer altogether, but I'm hoping to squeeze out couple more years on the computer if an upgrade is possible to resolve the issues above. (well maybe fixing diablo issue with a new video card might be long shot since I think I only have PCIe x16)

Please help with your recommendation/suggestions, thank you.

I believe it's 300W power supply and would any of these work with PCIe-16x first generation slots? I don't see any labeling on the computer or the spec document that it's 2.0

They are all interchangeable. So you can put a 1x card in a 2.0 slot, and a 2.0 in a 1x slot. Whats your budget? And Is it a regular ATX power supply?

if I can resolve all the issues, I'm willing to put at least $150 for decent card... but not sure if my power supply is an ATX.. it says "ATE OK" sticker on the outside.. doesn't say anything about ATX, and it doesn't have the power connector for video cards that some require.

will I be needing a new power supply as well for a decent video card?...

Probally, a $100 card, and a $50 power supply, and you will be be set. Im saying is it a slim one, or regular power supply? If it fits these measurements we are good.

awesome! it works great, thank you for the suggestion.

but I do notice a loud fan noise from the video card when it's just turned on without doing anything... is there way to adjust the fan so it's running less hard when it's not doing anything, and runs as it should when playing graphic intensive games like diablo3?

Is there some settings for the video card I can adjust?

you can customize the fan profiles using a number of programs. I do believe speedfan can do it, and I know that EVGA precision and MSI afterburner can do it.

I downloaded speedfan and it's showing me Graphics card is at 54 degrees Celsius?? that's 129 Fahrenheit. No wonder fan is revving hard... this is not normal temp for this card is it??

Yes that is normal. It will take run at 80c no problem. After 90c I would shut it down. Your good.
