Posting update

I tried vga from my laptop to the new monitor......no problems. The hp desk top has been sitting unpluged for <5 yrs. Are there motherboard battery issues at play?

If all you want is photos off the drive, why don't you remove the drive and install it in another computer? You could also use an adapter that would allow you to attach it to another computer via USB.

update

I found the e-g-force mx 400 nvidia box/instructions which talk about "disabiling on board video" which I must have done years ago. If the video card is bad unpluging it will not "enable" onboard video. The idea of removing drive and installing in different computer is good but I'm worried about bring any viruses into the new ccomputer. The hp was getting very slow which is one reason I got a new one.

If worried about viruses, install the hdd in another computer, boot into safe mode and run virus/malware scanning software. Even if you get the HP computer to boot, if there are viruses they could be transferred to another computer just by copying files from the hdd.

Update... I would try voodoo

Contacted nvidia, maker of game board, who suggested that removing their board would cause computer to default to original vga output.......did not work. OS is windows 98. Does anyone know the danger of infection if I put this old hp hard drive into new computer?
The old computer uses old style mouse and keyboard connections....not usb. I have no idea if using my current usb mouse/keyboard has proper drivers in this old hp. If I find old style mouse/keyboard can I enter setup (trying different f-keys) as the computer boots and should it display? This might allow me to re-enable original vga output.
Usually I'm an idiot after the computer starts and screen displays.....now I'm stupid before that. Any help other than voodoo would be appreciated. CORRECTION I will try voodoo. Greg
