Old computer, Old guy

I'm a complete newcomer and this is my first post on this MB; If I have the wrong forum, I hope a mod will move the thing.

For various reasons, I am in tight spot financially and I'm forced to use an old Del OptiPlex GX110.that was basically just laying around; It has 512 Mb of memory and that is the max the machine will accept.I've also added a board that give me USB 2.0.

I'm wondering if a new mother boad would allow me to add more ram? If so, what other changes could I expect as a result of changing the mother board>
Is it even wort doing?

Please bear in mind that I have no intention of game playing; I just want a reliable rock solid computer. I do use MSWord and Excel quite a lot, if that matters.
I'm also 69 years old so please keep the jargon in an understandable form. I appreciate your patience.

You are better off buying a new machine. As if you were going to put a new motherboard in there you might have to modify the case connections to the motherboard. You will be spending money on a motherboard, new ram, cpu, and what not. Your just better off buying a new computer.

Will you suggest a new ready made computer?

I concur with JohnB on this one... The design of that case would make it pretty much impossible to put a modern motherboard in there.

You would be much better served going to your local Bestbuy, Fry's or whatever electronics store is near you.

I am involved in a very contentious divorce; I can be forced to account for my spending as if I were still a child. Laying out money for a new computer can easily be construed as frivolous spending were as laying out money for repairs cannot. If I can't put a larger more up to date mother board in the thing, then I can't. I'll just have to live with it until the divorce is final and then upgrade. The thing is, this old computer is pretty much bulletproof and I love the way the case is designed and built, although I can see how it was designed for a specific motherboard. Anyway, this is not the first idea I've had that didn't work out. Thanks for the inputs.
