my neighbor wants email on her computer. It is old. It has WIN 95. No internet explorer or netscape. No CD. It does have Hayes data fax modem. How do i set up email for her?? thanks in advance, heidi

First off...I would strongly reccomend upgrading 'you neighbors' OS to atleast 98 SE, but if you can get your hands on a copy of 2000 that would be even better...if ya cant do any of that, then just go and download thunderbird fron mozilla.org and setup her email

travo925- there is no internet access - how do i download something with no internet access??? also, thunderbird shows win98 no win95 support.

i guess my first question should have been how to access internet -- not set up email. if i had internet i could set up email. It is weird seeing a computer without the big IE on it.

You need some service provider to acess the internet. I would check with places like AOL to see if they support windows 95. Any of the serivce provider you can call up and they will send you a free cd usually. I know a long time ago most of them supported windows 95 am not sure if they still do.

What you really need to do is try and find a CD drive for it, and try to get a freash install of windows on it. Preferably 98SE, but even 95 would help out. I bet anything that thing is loaded down with years of crap that's really messing things up.

After that, if you can get the info from the ISP, getting on the net shouldn't be too hard. Just enter the info into TCP/IP and it should connect no prob. Email...you should have outlook on there.

I beleive all windows after 3.1 had some version of IE on them...just look around. If you REALLY can't find it, there was a site called oldversions.com, or something like that that had some of the original versions of software. Maybe you could find Netscape 3 or 4.

I really whouldn't try to set up the Internet on Windows 95 as there are no updates for security and things for it and there will be updates for Windows 98/98 SE until June 2006 I suggest upgrading to at least Windows 2000.

Then go with BT internet they are quite cheap for the speed.

you'll more then likely have to go to a local little shop around town and set up an account
one that you can just use the dial up program already on the computer
don't remember exactly what the name of the thing is right now, but we use it at home to get connected to our local provider
aol won't be able to help
you need to be running the latest version of aol for it to let you online, and about the last version i knew that COULD work on 95 was version 5 or 6

another thing, i would definatley advise to download firefox as the explorer. it's a lot safer then IE
more functionality as well in most areas

Hehe, why not. It probably couldn't run anything that's compatable with current spyware and such! Hehe... Also if it's just for E-Mail, and they use a program, it should be pretty safe.

Ya know, I could set up a P200 or something if people need some simple net computer... I got a P200 and a 166 that I want to get rid of :P

The fact that spyware is not compatiable with Windows 95 I still wouldn't recommend using the internet as there are viruses that are compatiable with Windows 95.

Do you know what kind of processor and system specs? If you knew that, then you could do a search and find what you could put on there. What kind of laptop?

the only thing I would suggest is that you upgrade your OS to nothing lower than 98 SE even then I would suggest ultimately XP. ME is too buggy

You could suggest something more to help out this person besides mentioning the fact that they "Should" upgrade to a better OS ;)

Theres no need to upgrade, there are free email's on the net that you can sign up with "not having to worry system compatibility". As for Viruses they can just as easily get on XP/Older OS's.

The system could be old and there would be no point of putting windows XP on it because it wouldn't simply run. Any computer using Windows 95 would have to be old unless someone likes using older OS's

Seting up internet is easy...

*Ring an ISP and get them to send a package of what you want eg (Broadband, Dial-up)

*When you recieve the package there would most likely be a CD inside install it and read the steps to setup the internet

Some cd's come with Internet Explorer...well mine did ;)

What kind of laptop?

Laptop were, when was that mentioned :P

Windows2000 on a pre-optical drive system??

Holy crap people this thread is about "how to get it to work" -- NOT "is W95 a good platform for internet" :D
