old cpu, trying to erase OS, start anew

I have an older computer (2yrs) that got completely screwed over by a trojan. I cut my losses as no one could fix the problem (can not use anything except in safemode). I extracted all my files, pics, etc.. from safemode using linux onto an external hd.

Now, i want to wipe the whole system clean, installing a new Windows XP.

Several questions:

1. I have no recovery disks what so ever. I'm assuming i will need something to as far as drivers for my DVDRW and CDRW drives, correct? Since i dont have any, how would/could acquire them and get them on the system?

2. How do i wipe clean my computer?

3. Is installing the OS as simple as shutting down the computer, starting it up with the software disks in the drive and running with it?

I think i found some drivers i can download from online (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...=240394&lang=en)

but if my cdroms dont work, how would i get them onto the computer?

The computer is a Compaq Presario 8000 (8ZSPE2 to be exact)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

1. not necessarily... unless it has special features like lightscribe... the most basic features of the drive will work (windows loads basic, universal drivers to complete the installation process)... you probably will need to reinstall your burning program... if you have no disks, then you may have to buy a new program...

2. when you reinstall the OS, it will ask you if you want to install it in some partition (providing its a windows based pc, don't know about any other OS's), you have an option to delete that partition and reformat it...

3. yes, as long as the optical drive is set to read first (or before your hard drive) in the boot order...

to the best of my knowledge... by deleting and reformating the partition, you remove any existence of the files... but make sure you do the "full" format and not the quick option...
