Old harddrive with OS in new setup.

I'm doing an upgrade and I've sold my everything in my computer buy my harddrives, I have my operating system on one, I was woundering if i can just plug my harddrive in the new setup and it work?

I've tryed it before but only sometimes it works other times it won't let me boot it. hmm?? anyone help me on that one.

heres my new and old setup if it helps

old - ASUS A8N32 sli deluxe, AMD 64 x2 4800+, 1gig duel channel ddr 400 ram(2x 512),nivida geforce 6800gt,

new - ASUS P5W DH deluxe, Intel core 2 duo E6400, 1gig ddr2 800 ram,ati readon x1950pro,

still waiting for parts to arive
 
Because so much hardware is changing you should reinstall your OS, and even if it boots you will most likely have to reactivate it.
 
I've had the same problem before, and I think that switching from an AMD to an Intel is a guarantee on having to do a reinstall. I know that you can also repair an OS, but I've never had it work, and I don't know if it is applicable in this instance.
 
i would reinstall it but the thing is that i have stuff on the harddrive and no place to back them up to all my harddrives are full and i cant afford a new one. so a reinstall would mean clearing my harddrive. which means clearing the data. is there anyway around that without haveing to clear the data. besides making a new partition because i dont like making partitions in the middle of the dirive. nor do i like making partitions on harddrives.
 
Switching CPUs is major surgery for a computer. When I switched motherboard, my XP professional made me activate it again.
