Old HP not powering up??

for some reason i volunteered to look at a friends comp. she said that when she pushed the power button it would start up and stay on for about 15 sec and then just shut off, nothing would display on the screen.

i now have it and it does absolutly nothing when i hit the button. i took the front cover off and ohmed out the power button. it read fine. i took the 20- pin MOBO power cord and jumped the #14 and #15 wires to test if the CPU fan would come on and it works fine. so im assuming the PSU is fine, i think, not sure if that tells me it has JUST enough power to run the fan and not enough for the whole system or not...

More info: its a Hewlett Packerd Pavilion 6643. she told me it was about 7 years old. and she only uses it for her two daughters ( 7 and 9) for them to play games on. no internet is connected.

if anyone has an idea or knows where to point me next pls let me know.

thanks.

thanks for info oscary but when i said that i had jumped two wires to test the psu by seeing if the fan came on that "should" mean the CPU fan and the psu works. and as far as hard ware... its a prebuilt comp. so that should be out of the picture right??

herm, so i think i'll go with the overheating and/or bad MOBO.

not dogin ya, just thinking out loud. thanks for the imput.

On my old Compaq Presario it would shut off if it doesnt go to 2000 RPM on the fan or so... to prevent overheating that is.

thats PC100/Pc133 RAM. But different manufactureres. A piece of memory can look different but the pins on the bottom iwll still be the same. Look up DDR ram and SDRAM the pins will look different.

ok, after playing with it enough i believe it is for sure the power supply. sometimes i can turn it right on. other times i have to wiggle or even remove and reconnect the power cord to make it come on. i was going to take it up to my local shop and have them test the PSU with there gadgetry but after what i found im just goin to order one. prolly this one less i can find a cheaper one.
