Old laptop + new laptop? Or old laptop + new desktop...

I just ordered a 250gb hard drive for my 3 year old Dell inspiron e1505 after the old one broke (because the backspace key is right over the hd, so when you get angry and try to delete something, bad things happen). The battery is shot (second one), the lcd back screen is kinda wobbly, there's 1 gig of RAM, and I was told (two years ago) the graphics card is pretty decent. I plan to put Ubuntu on it when the new hd arrives.
My question is, should I get a new laptop, and slightly upgrade the one I have now and use it as a "desktop"?
Or should I get/build a desktop, and replace the battery on the old laptop?
I've got 1 year of college left, living off campus. And I'm not a gamer. I do do photography/photo editing though.

What's your advice?

Let's see..
How much money would you be willing to spend for the new laptop or custom desktop?
And how much would it cost to get the battery replaced on the old laptop, and is it light enough to lug around with you?

Because your a student,I think a Laptop would be best for you still.

But we need to know your budget.

My budget is around 800 dollars or so. Cheaper is obviously better.
Dell wants $150 for a new battery, but I found one for $60 (of debatable quality I'm sure).
I'm leaning toward the double laptop idea.
I saw

in another thread, but my only problem is that all the ports are on the side, which is dumb, (but not so bad since I'll have a "desktop" hooked up anyways.)

I saw in other threads seemed okay as well, although I don't know how long these deals will be up for.

photography and photo editing software requires system resources and memory , in upcoming days more graphics software will be launched demanding more ram and resources , and you have only 1 year left so what i suggest is to go for a new desktop + old laptop thing. you will be more future proof.
plus as far as money is concern you will get more vivid feature on a desktop than a laptop for same amount of money.
