hey y'all, i just got a really old tv from my basement and moved it up (toshiba 2979XP) to my room. The picture quality is awesome..but every time i turn on the TV, there's this static buzzing sound .. even if i mute the tv, its still there.....?, and the sound goes away and reappears as the image on the screen changes...
some help would be appreciated..
thanks

Okay. Two issues here.

1. The buzz you hear. Is it from the speakers, or is it from the chassis itself? If it's from the chassis, then it's likely to be a mechanical buzz from circuitry on the PC board. I have a GE like that. Nothing to be done.

2. The mute circuits on Toshiba TVs has to do with the picture. It's not like a lot of more modern TV sets where the muting circuits control the audio output. An older Toshiba will mute the sound via the tuner. When the picture is disturbed (usually via weak signals from an antenna system), the muting will unlock and you'll hear sound. I had two Toshibas that did this, a 19" and a 27". The only way around this is to make sure you have a strong and steady signal, usually from cable TV or a good roof antenna.

It's not too uncommon for such electronics to develop a buzz over time. I recall this old monitor I had that had this rather horrific whine to it. The brighter you had it, the worse it got. Oddly enough, my 15" LCD I use at school with my mac has a slight buzz to it too. Funny thing, it's actually louder than my Mini is! But there's really nothing that can be done. I guess if you really delve into it, you may find the component that's causing the sound, but it's not worth it. Old CRT's are actually rather dangerous to work in...

Extremely high voltage charges are stored in the CRT and on-board capacitors. Touching the terminals can give you a bad burn and/or a NASTY electric shock. Unless you know EXACTLY what you're doing, never go poking inside a monitor cabinet.
