Old Vista Business PC

I pick up an old Dell Poweredge 1500 SC server for free when my office Dell replacement. It always worked great at work. It;s loaded with Vista Business OS. All updates from Microsoft loaded quick as ever and is up to date. I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials and it had the anti Malware builtin.

Everything worked great until I finished all the upgrades and updates. I've run Defrag several times but still too slow online.

But, when I connect it to my router at home, it crawls on the internet. the Dell itself is quick as ever, but online at home it's extremely slow.

My home setup is a steady DSL 6.0 speed, and I've tried other PCs and laptop and they work fine online.

The server sometimes takes 60 seconds to change the screen from forward or the back button.

The internet works with the Dell, it's just too slow to really enjoy.

I tried to install the Dell Detect program so Dell can see any problem, but it fails or times out before completing.

Ant ideas about the slow online response?

Go into the tcp/ip settings and make sure that you are getting the ip address and dns servers automatically and they aren't set manually for when it was at the business. What browser are you using?

Internet Explorer 9.

I tried to download Mozilla and Chrome but both stopped before complete. I thought it was because the system is Vista Business edition.

When I downloaded all the hundreds of updates from Microsoft the system was fast and perfect as long as I was connected to Microsoft.com.

But when I connect to websites like any of our locall TV stations, each page takes at least 60 seconds to change.

Wunderground is my homepage just to keep up with the rain chances, and the site slows down to a crawl.

I only have the Dell Server running when I try to test it, so it's the only computer online at the time.
I'm connected now on my old home pc since the server takes too long to do the same thing.

Online it's a drag.

Personally I'd just do a fresh format.

Try the above and see what kind of addressing it is set up for. In a home environment you want to roll DHCP. Also you might want to verify you don't have jumbo packets enabled and similar configured if your other LAN devices don't support 9K MTUs, otherwise a lot of your traffic will be fragmented.

My problem with a fresh format and install is that I don't have the orginal Vista Business Disks.

I would like to keep the Business version because I'm want to give this server to a friend who can't afford a computer and the cost of internet services.

His neighbor has unsecure wifi and will let him access his connection for free.
I have Wifi working so they can get the internet from his neighbor.
My friend is 78 years old and doesn't get out as much as he wants to and has never been interested in the internet until he and his wife finally realized the local and national newspapers have been reporting slanted information and only the news they want him to read.

They also have finally seen that the local and national TV news channels also report how good liberal people are and how bad conservative people are.

He and his wife are very conservative in their views on life, but realized the old newspapers never tell the whole truth. They have canceled their newspaper and usually always now watch FoxNews for todays news.

Sorry for the rant, but last year they started going to the library to get more information but fear the traffic problems at 78 years old. His wife is 80.

So, this Vista server is for them.

The TCP/IP was set for static so I changed the setting to Auto, but the system is still slow online. To click on a new site it's quick, but slows down inside the site.

It sounds crazy but for example, I can click on the internet and it quickly goes to google as their home page. Click on a local TV site for the weather information it's quick, but click on tomorrows forcast it slows down again. Click on another TV web site it's quick, but click on local information inside that web site it's slows down to a crawl and takes about 50 seconds to change a page.

I wanted to give the server to them for Christmas but it still not good enough, any more help would make their lives better.

See if there is a hidden recovery partition on the drive. You can check this by using disk management. Looks like you will need to reinstall fresh.
