On board sound card

There seems to be no sound device installed. When I look it up in the hardware profile or whatever. There is nothing installed. It's the on board sound card. It's a real old system too. P4 and all that. Just installed XP Home though. Any suggestions?

Besides being carefull in not starting duplicate threads when pressing the post new thread button. That happens mostly to new members there.

The first thought would be going for any updates available since those will see an installer for onboard sound drivers as well as memory controllers and other things. You may have to dig deeper at the support site depending on just how old the P4 system is.

Is it a prebuilt or custom case? For a prebuild you can simply look up the specification and driver update pages by using a selection process at the manufacturer's support site. I just to had to refurbish an old Dell L433c with a 433mhz Celeron seeing 64mb of ram at the Dell support site and still found drivers for the old 98/NT available there. That includes drivers for the old Creative Sound Blaster installed and the onboard Intel gpu chip.

With the make and model number inhand find the manufacturer's home page from the links seen at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/newcompanyweb.html If the driver updates had been previously saved to a folder on the drive you can also right click on the sound device listing in the device manager to select have Windows search for them when choosing the update driver option in the right click menu.

If the original disk for the system is onhand whether recovery for a prebuilt or the board's software disk on a custom build the drivers for onboard sound will be an option there. You can also right click on the item in the DM in order to browse to the drivers folder and select those in the audio folder. Any updates will generally have their own zip file extractor and installer seen.

It's a custom built PC. Fresh Windows XP Home Install. No CDs at all on hand.

Duplicate thread was made because Computer didn't load it.

Don't worry about the dupe thread since a mod will take care of that. Lately there's been some server problems and thought you should be aware of this.

For locating any updates still available for the older board there the make and model would have to be posted here if you can't readily locate them at the manufacturer's site. If you unsure of what model the board is a free tool known as System Info for Windows(SIW) will display all the information needed. http://www.gtopala.com/

Google your model number. I would not recommend download anywhere except your manufacturer website. I've downloaded drivers and BIOS updates for Slot 1 motherboards. A P4 should have no problem, seeing as they're socket 423, 478, or 775.

Did your mobo come with a driver CD? Onboard audio usually have a driver in the mobo CD.

For an old 98/NT OSed Dell the drivers for the Lxxxc series were found readily available for the older Socket 370 system. There is a US law requiring manufcaturers to provide support for products upto ten years on the books. The make and model would help here however in locating the manufacturer's support page for it.
