On my second Toshiba M205 in 2 weeks...

Hello All,

I am new to this forum, this is my first post. I had a few questions hopefully someone could clear up for me.

I have previously owned 2 Dell laptops, the 5150 with the Pentium M and the 600m with the Centrino processor. 2 weeks ago I purchased a Toshiba M205-S4806, Intel Duo Core, 200gb, a/g/n wireless, and LabelFlash. I thought it was a pretty decent computer for what I paid for it. I am a law student and need a reliable computer for 6+ hour tests. About a week after I bought my new computer, I noticed the fan was running CONSTANTLY. One day, the computer brought up a blue screen, then just completely shut off. I figured no big deal, probably a one time thing. A few days later, while browsing the internet, it completely shut off, no warning or anything. I called Toshiba and they told me to return it for a new one.

No problem, I return it and get a new one. Now, the fan on this computer is loud, especially compared to the Dell 600m I had. It's loud when I am just sitting here using the internet and the internet only. I downloaded SpeedFan, but was told it didn't work with the Toshiba interface. I used the "Battery Optimized" cooling fan setting, and it turns the fan on very low, but it gets very loud. How can I check the temp of my HD and my CPU on this computer?

Thanks a lot for the help, sorry about the length of it. Any suggestions would be great, even if they are "return that computer and get a different brand." Thanks!

I just downloaded that about 20 minutes ago. Here is what happens:

When it is in "Battery Optimized" mode, the CPU was at 86 degrees celsius, both of the cores hovering around 80 degrees celsius

I turned it back to "Maximum Performance" which will turn the fans back on (apparently 100%) and they dropped down to the low 40s. The problem with this is the fan is extremely loud.

Why do Toshiba fans have to be so loud?

 hhmmm the blue screen of death :P

sounds like the CPU got to hot... my grandfathers toshiba did the same :cool:

I just cannot believe that it could happen to a BRAND NEW COMPUTER. I had it for a week, and it happened twice.

:eek::eek::eek: Yeah - well my grandfather has had his a lot longer.... i can't believe it!:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::cool:

Well just as I was reading this forum the computer shut off out of no where, yet again. What in the hell is going on, how is it even possible that 2 brand new computers shut down like this?

It would defiantly be the CPU it is getting to hot - i had the problem with my desktop CPU! I would contact Toshiba or go get a refund and by another laptop, different brand. I'm sure there are some guys on the forum that can help you do some research.

Thanks for all of your help vk. I'll call Toshiba tomorrow. I agree that the CPU is getting too hot, the CPU was running at about 88, with the Cores running at about 82-83. Perhaps I'll get an HP instead?

No problems at all anytime.

Well the CPU is very high... mine was about 50C on my desktop.

Now it is sitting at 20C cause i didn't take the plastic off the fan!

uumm... yes HP would be better.

i hae to agree that cpu is verrry high seeing as how mine runs at 30C and I've a Toshiba M115-S3094 with a Centrino Dual Core Processor....

maybe that model has a design flaw???

Could be - Lets see what happens once he has spoken to Toshiba.

Toshiba's are well known for breaking down. My friends mom has one and she's had to send it under warranty 3 times now, all the times to do with overheating. Also someone I work with has a Toshiba doing the same thing. I dunno what happened, but Toshiba seems to have gone all to shit. I'd trust a Dell more than a Toshiba(and I did, no problems yet and I've had it for a year).

Yes it has more ventilation than a laptop.

When i go to my grandparents i'll have to monitor it there (the laptop CPU) and see what it peaks up to.
