onboard esata and sata ports

hi guys,

ive got a mobo with 2 extra ports one sata and one esata and when i try and connect an esata drive to the esata port it works fine but when i connect the esata drive to the sata port it doesnt work, why is this the case as i thought esata is sata compatible

eSATA may be SATA capable, but you were trying the opposite.

eSATA is meant to be plugged into an eSATA port, not a SATA port.
