Onboard Video Chipset

I'm fairly new to the computer world, and I'm attempting to piece together the information and parts I need to build my first desktop. My first question is a simple one, I'm sure. The motherboard I'm looking at buying list a certain onboard video chipset. I know what integrated graphics are, and how they work, I think, but my question is will that interfere with a video card I buy that is different? Or will the video card simply cancel out, or overrule, the chipset?
