One final upgrade?

Do you think if i swapped out my x2 3800 2.0 GHz @ 2.6GHz with 512 mb L2 cache for a x2 4200 @ 2.2 GHz and 1 mb L2 cache i would see any noticable difference in speed, fps etc...

I would over clock it surely, would i be able to take it to 2.8 GHz (a 600 MHz increase like my 3800) So im asking would an extra 200 MHz and extra cache speed anything up significantly

Your opinions, i can get one for around £45 and possibly sell the old 3800 for the same or a bit lower

Thanks for any input

EDIT just realised that the 4200 only has 512 mb L2 cache not 1 mb so take that into account aswell

Also would i see any performance jump if i bought an opteron as i hear they over clock like an angel

Both 3800+ and 4200+ have 512KB L2 cache per core, which means they have 1MB total cache memory.

I hear some people swear by them. I'm not totally sure about their performance, being a workstation processor, but they are good... I'm sure there are benchmarks around. But if you "REALLY" want to upgrade, look for an FX series ;) Though, I forget if there are any duel core 939 models...

Hmmm ive read that an opteron 170 @2.0 can get to 2.8 GHz stable and also has 1 mb of L2 cache, this seems like it would be better than the x2 3800.

I think mayeb if i can pick up a cheapo 170 or 175 or maybe 180 from ebay i may consider it and see how high i can over clock it,

Are the multipliers locked?

I have also seen on ebay a new opteron 165 @ 1.8 GHz, Many customers have left great feedback, one saying they got it to 2.7 on stock volts and another saying they got it to 2.9 at stock volts, this seems hard to believe, but it seems this seller has a great stepping opteron.

Would i notice any difference in a 3800 @ 2.6 ghz with 512mb L2 cache and an opteron @ 2.6 GHz (with a potential to go a lot higher, and possibly a lot cooler) with 1 MB of cache

idk about the opteron I have a fx 62 but its socket am2 does anybody know why there are three fx-62's and they range from 450 to 169?

Compatible Processors Athlon 64, Athlon 64 FX, Athlon 64 X2
64-bit Processors Compatibility Built-in
Processor Socket Socket 939
Multi-Core Support Dual-Core
Chipset Type NVIDIA nForce4 SLI

Looks like im screwed. is there any way an opteron would run on this board ? :(
