one graphics card, or a new motherboard?

Hi, im new to computer parts, but i want to build my first computer.
I want it to have 3 monitors to make my work easier and maybe every now and then play a few games.
While looking around for a graphics card my friend said that even though the graphics card has 3 outputs on it, you can only use 2 of them, so if i want 3 monitors i will need a motherboard which can have two graphics card slots in them.
Is this true, and if so, what is the cheapest motherboard like that?
(as this is my first build i have a fairly low budget)
 
Generally modern cards like the 600 series and 7000 series can support 3 cards natively, you just wont be able to do a surround view in a game with less powerful cards and expect a good framerate
