Just as I've gotten all the money and I'm wrapping up everything down to the last piece of hardware I realized something. I've picked out the case, the monitor, the keyboard, the mouse, the cpu, the mobo, the ram, the HD, the VGC, the PSU, the OS, and the Security. But wait....how am I going to install the drives and the OS? I have an external USB ROM that is all i want, but the drivers for it are on disc.
Will I be able to plug it in and it get picked up automatically or will I have to purchase at least a cheap disc reader to install everything? If so, can a OEM reader work or will I have to purchased a retail reader? Also if the HD is OEM will I need to purchase SATA cables?

Please can someone answer these questions for me?

You're going to need a DVD/CD drive for O/S install. You can get em for 20-30 bucks - or pull one off an old computer if you have one laying around. It's a good idea to have one anyway. Lots of software comes on disk.

I have read somewhere where a person used a USB drive to install windows - but it's beyond my understanding to tell you how to do it.

Ok, yeah that was my main question. I have already selected a decent Sony dvd drive for $19. But it is OEM, as are most drives sold on newegg. Will an OEM drive be able to be picked up by the new system or will I need to get a retail one?

The main reason I'm trying to avoid getting another drive is to keep cost down, which $19 isn't really significant, but also becuase I don't want an offset shade drive making my case look bad.

Yeah - OEM = no owners manual or wires included with the Drive. Other than that - it's the same as retail. You can find owners manual and drivers online at the mfr's site. But my drive was pretty much plug and play when I installed windows 7 - everything took care of itself.

You won't need any cables. The motherboard and most hard drives will come with SATA cables. You'll have a few left over trust me;)

The power cable is on the power supply...you will directly connect it to the CD/DVD drive. Just plug those two things in and you'll be fine:D

OEM hard drives don't come with cables. My WD came in a plastic bag - sent out with peanut packaged shipping box from Newegg.

But the MOBO will have plenty. IIRC - my MOBO came with 3 SATA cables and 1 IDE cable.
