That will depend on the type of virus and how far spread it is on the system. Once a virus has been found the usual advice is to turn off the system restore process to see all current restore points deleted. This prevents a reinfection of the system. If the virus can't be removed entirely the hard drive is often wiped clean by deletion of the current partition(s). Windows is then reinstalled on a brand new primary partition.

Two things you can try:
1. Run Ad-aware, Spybot, etc., whatever ad-removal tool you like the best.
2. Try to switch over to Firefox or Opera. Most of those pop-ups are designed for IE specifically and will not function on most other browsers, especially ones with higher security like Firefox and Opera.

i already got Firefox and Opera.
but i want to get rid off that pop ups virus or i do't know what it is.
so you think if i reinstall the computer that pop up virus will disapear??
because thats is not the only cause of my interest in reinstalling.i got another problems with my computer besides virus.

If you are currently running IE 6 one quick recommend here is to upgrade to IE 7 and follow the previous instructions to run adware/spyware removers. One freeware under review here seems to be more effective then AdAware SE Personal that's also free at http://www.lavasoft.com
The Spyware Terminator recommended in PC World magazine recently is currently running along with AdAware here. http://www.spywareterminator.com/ This particular program also includes a personal firewall that will prompt you whenever anything new tries to startup. So far "no" popups are being seen lately.
IE 7 includes it's own popup blocker as well as an antiphising filter that alerts you when some invalid site attempts to copy any spyware/malware onto your system unnoticed. The upgrade is readily available at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx

what's the best antivirus/spyware to get
Hi, I am on 'STOP' acceleration for protection, it scans and had told
me of two spyware infections that it quaranteens. Today I went to
Adaware for a free scan and the scan said I had over 2500 infected
folders and spyware etc.etc. Do companies 'add' this stuff so you buy it?
I want to be protected and protected properly, I am getting a new laptop
in a few weeks and also need to be able to transfer my existing software to the new one.
I'm not buying anything till I hear back from this forum!

first of all you don't transfer programs from one system to another but once connected online you can easily download some rather good freewares or free versions available. For seeing the same programs on a new machine they still have to be installed fresh all over again.
Now for seeing some 2,500 whatever nonsense where "you must buy" the full retail version to see "those things" get fixed tell them a few things like you not "guillable"! enough to be taken in. Webroot's Spy Sweeper's shareware version gets that one for sure! Be a good listener and people here can point you at the better programs whether freeware or retail for use on the new laptop you buy. Vista or XP won't matter!

it doesn't really sound like a virus. you comp is just plagued with lots of spyware and adware. i don't really get much of those because i know which links to NOT click and what not to install. even still, i run "ad-aware" about once every few months just in case. just download it... it's free
I run one or two of the programs regularly used here simply for cleaning the typical data miners used by web sites to track your browsing habits. Some of those try and get ISP information as well leading to spam of your primary account as well as contacts stored in the OE address book. You'll find those almost daily from simply running a web search on shopping as well as other places.
