If you're looking for lightweight and free, you could try Soldat or BZFlag, which are both fun online&lan based games. Soldat is like a realtime version of worms, and bzflags is like a fps tank instagib game.

prob. one of the most popular: counter strike...which one...i dunno. I've always been a fan of Worms Armagedon...but I can never find anyone to play. Does Doom 3 have online capability?

You can play Doom 3 online but it's only 6 players i think.
