Only 1 of 4 cores being recognised... HELP

I need help desperately here... I just spent $600 on a Quad Core processor, but it only recognizes 1 core! Performance under task manager shows only one graph, and CPUZ recognizes I have a Core 2 Quad, but still says I have only 1 Core. I'm desperate, and willing to do anything that is free of charge. Please help me. Thanks in advance.

Note that I installed Vista first, which saw all 4 cores just fine, but otherwise, Vista was total crap, so I installed XP, and now my system is in peril!

My specs are:

Windows XP Home Edition
Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ stock speeds (2.4 GHz)
2 GB DDR2 RAM
EVGA 8800 GTS 640 MB
320 GB Hard Drive
ASUS P5N-E SLI Motherboard

Do you have SP2? Most likely! One problem initially seen with dual core cpus was a sudden loss of performance. The registry fix for this originally dealt with dual cpu boards and was applied to problems seen with XP when running the then new dual core models.

This was seen mainly with AMD models there. AMD later released a patch for their line. This problem was seen in both versions of XP. The performance drops where seen after SP2 was released. The MS page on the registry edit needed is seen at http://support.microsoft.com/?id=896256

That makes me wonder how XP will run on a board seeing two quad core model cpus. XP Pro has more network support built into it for logging onto networks over the Home version. The multi cpu boards are primarily seen in server not desktop builds explaining that one. I'm still waiting to see when the single cpu boards will be out for a model like the FX-74. You'll probably see Intel eventually come out with a patch or reg edit as well as the MS tip seen at the lonk for performance losses with the first AMD dual core models.

The page there simply refers to the same MS link posted earlier calling for a specific registry value to be created.
