hey guys, i just got a western digital passport 120gb 2.5" external HDD (for $50, w00t!:D). when i plug it into my laptop, it shows only 111gb available, 65mb of which is software and drivers that came with it. so my question is...what gives? why do i not get the 120GB thats advertised??? fyi, its format is fat32.

come to think of it, thats about the same situation with my laptop too...about 5-6gb out of 120gb are unaccounted for...

Read the fine print. Manufacturers consider a gigabyte as 1000 megabytes, not 1024.

120 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000 = 120000000000 bytes
120000000000 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 = 111.8 gigabytes(plus or minus)

ahhhh, i see...those butt munchers
Indeed, at least you didn't buy a 500GB, format it and find out you only actually have 465 someodd gigs. 8GB 'lost' isn't so bad but 35 is quite a few
