Open ports in DSL modem/router

I am in a network with all PCs connected directly to a modem/router through a hub.
I have all permissions in my PC, and I can do anything.
Some downloading programs ask me to open some ports in the modem and I dont know how. Login through telnet? How? And then waht? Can you give me some instructions?

First of all, you do not need to open ports in your modem. Do you have cable? DSL? it sounds like you have a broadband connection running to a router and your PC's connected to your router. Are you getting terminology mixed up? Post some more information about your setup so we can more accurately help you.
 
sounds totally right to me....definitely a router, if it's a linksys router i can instruct you further, but at the moment i know little about any others b/c i only use linksys.
