Open Source Router Firmware

I've been thinking about getting rid of the stock firmware that came with my Linksys WRT54GL and replace it with DD-WRT, but I can't seem to justify all the "risk" and learning involved to do it.

What are the benefits?

Oh and I saw with this firmware you can overclock.. Is there any point? I suppose if its running a protocol, but I am only doing basic P2P.

I reflashed my Asus routers firmware with DD-WRT, and while it has more feature and monitoring tools, I never use them. They are cool to play around with for a few days, but after that you end up keeping the settings the same as they were before.

It wasn't any risk for me though, just simply download the firmware and upload it via the web interface. I went back and forth a few times with no issues.

Yea, my router can't handle going straight to the full version of DD-WRT. I have to load up a mini version and then go to it. This model doesn't have enough NVRAM.

That aside, my biggest curiosity is whether it boosts performance. I have seen people post on other forums about how much faster DD-WRT is over stock, but I am having a hard time believing it.
