Operating System Comparison Question

So I was thinking of maybe changing to Linux as opposed to Windows XP. But I was wondering if Linux is any better or worse than XP and the same goes for XP if its any better or worse than Linux. I'm sure each OS probably is better at some things than the other, but I was just wondering what those things might be. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Lol

Support - XP Better
Compatibilty - XP Better
Ease of use - XP Better
Usability (games, programs etc) - XP Better
Networking - Linux Better
Safety - Linux Better

There is plenty more.... but this is a quick list I can think of.

That pretty much sum's it up. Bsides the part that linix is mostly FREE, which is good, but if your a agmer stick with XP, you'll have a hardtime running games on linux.

*nods* I tinkered with the networking in Linux some and it worked well, but I can't say it's much better than Windows. They did a good job with 2000/XP. But again, I've really never used Linux. Just a few times as a test run. No dedicated box.

Networking with linux blows XP away, so does multitasking and just general usability under heavy loads. Linux is great for automating tasks, doing incredible amounts of utilitarian type work. These days its various GUI's for it make it just a good a choice as windows for the average person, anybody who's used windows can sit down in front of gnome or KDE and be right at home. The big difference is not only the philosophy of the OS's, but in order to make the best of linux it takes some learning and time. Linux is like a giant box of tools, you get to pick which ones you want to use in your OS with linux. There's like a dozen windowmanagers/GUI's, more than a dozen browsers, lots and lots of choices. Its all modular and you can add what you want, you can do whatever you want no restrictions. Alot of it just means using a commandline interface to set things up, which is becoming almost unknown to windows and OS X users, that is a shame, its a very powerful and quick way to get things done.

lol

You see the same shift in functionality from XP to linux that you see in XP to windows 2000, except larger. You give up a lot of user friendliness for power and flexibility. So if you know how to use it Linux is more powerfull. If you are not computer literate, XP is better

Networking with windows may be easier but linux beats windows in networking performance.

There is no best operating system (As it's been said time and time again), it really depends on the situation. But if I had to choose based on performance, reliability, and security, I'd say FreeBSD for the win. http://people.freebsd.org/~murray/bsd_flier.html .

Well said pedex. And I agree with Xycron. If you're a gamer either dualboot, or go with windows.
