i was just wondering what would be better 1 high end video card or 2 mid high end
like a 5830x2
or a 5870
 
Well the 5870 of course because you can always pick up another 5870 down the road to crossfire them too as an upgrade.
 
Well if you had two 5830's you'd be crossfiring them...same thing as Nvidia's SLI, two video cards work as one unit for better performance.
 
The rule is always 1 stronger card over 2 weaker cards. You can have issues with gameplay and consistency in Crossfire/ SLI. Basically each card delivers every other frame so if you have any glitches you can imagine. The 5870 is an easy choice.
