I am looking for opinions on Windows Vista Basic 32-bit Service Pack 2 versus Windows XP 32-bit Service Pack 2 for video games.

I do not care about security because I do not use my Windows for the Internet much. Will boot times be faster or slower with Vista? Will games run better or worst?

Games I play are mainly:

GT Racing 2

Hoyle Card Games 2005

Ghost Recon I

If all the games you will be playing use Microsoft direct X version 9.0 C or older then Windows XP is definetely the best choice.
If games require Microsoft direct X version 10.0 or newer in order to even work then you will need to use Windows Vista or newer OS such as Windows 7 which is by the way better than Vista in performance and memory handling.

All in all Windows XP is definetely a lot better for games than Vista since the performance and especially the RAM memory handling is a lot better in XP than it is in Vista.Vista requires a lot memory where XP does not.

99% of the games support Microsoft direct X version 9.0 C anyway so XP is definetely your best choice. It is VERY VERY VERY RARE that you will find a game which supports ONLY Microsoft direct X version 10.0 or newer.

As for the security,XP and Vista are both good secured if you use a good antivirus software lol.Without the good antivirus software it is like you don't have a security even if you use the newest OS ;)
Just because OS is new does not mean it is 100% secured. The level of the security depends on the antivirus you use and NOT the OS.

Cheers!

I already own a Windows Vista installation disk and that is why I was asking the question. I shut my network card drivers off for Windows XP so I do not have to worry about anything getting into my Windows XP. I may be buying a new Windows 7 64-bit installation disk soon after I update my motherboard.

I use my Linux Ubuntu 10.04 mainly for Internet use.

Thanks for the response.

I agree that you should use XP instead of vista basic. XP will run much smoother on games then vista basic will.
