OPTERON CPUs ???

was lookin to buy a new cpu maybe 3700 san diego, but lots of people keep tellin me to go for amd opteron processor. ive found somewhere that sells em but want to know is there anything i need to know b4 hand...... will it work the same as a standard athlon64? is it simply plug and play, do i need to alter anything?

im lookin to buy with the intention of learnin to overclock. any help would be great!;) ;) ;) ;)
 
It's basically the same, Opteron's have generally lower stock speeds, but will overclock better. In order to get the same performance as the A64, you'll need to overclock the Opteron, at least a little.
 
are you going to overclock your cpu? once you buy it?
if yes, go with opteron 14(x) series like 148 or something
if NO, go with normal 3700 san diego
 
im hopefully goin to OC it a tat. nothing to major {must learn 1st tho}. i believe the 3700 san diego runs at 2.2 ghz, if i was to get an opty that runs as standard at 2.2ghz would it be the same and would there be any difference?

p.s i will also get a different cooler for it.
 
Optys only OC better than standard A64s if you get the right stepping. Mostly CABNE and CABYE for single core, most of which are on very short supply.

No there will be no differnece if you overclock it to 2.2, go for the 146 and overclock it its cheaper and you can get the same results. My friend has a 146 and he got his to 3.0 ghz on water.

but i get 3.28GHz on air :P and i have a 4000+, which is only 200MHz faster then the 3700+
 
ok guys thanks for all the advice, think ill go for the 146 opty. see how i get on.

p.s 1st time on this forum and very impressed, if i have any probs ill be postin;)

yea i will add to his comment i resentally started posting here and i am very happy with the forum i usally get responses very quickly which is really nice.
