opteron??

If the opterons are so good and a low price, why do people still choose x2 over it for the gaming aspect only. i almost bought a x2 4400 then i talked to someone and they convinced me to get a opteron 170. from what he said, it sounds like i will be having fun. i was just curious as to why the opterons were less expensive, and not as well known? Just curious. Thanks.

oh man i bought opteron 165, instead of x2 3800,
and i had soo much fun overclocking it...
the core speed 1.8Ghz all the way up to 2.5~2.7Ghz

its amazing how much opteron can handle.

i heard opteron 170, or 175 can easilly be oc'ed up to 3Ghz...

i guess the reason why opterons are cheaper is that, there are only 3 dual core modles?
opteron 165,170,175???
compared to x2 series, 3800,4000,4200,4400,4600,4800,
and even x2 5000?? on a new socket thats comming out?

well if you are not going to oc an opteron, go with x2 4400 like you said...
but the opteron has powerful oc'ing with may be proper cooling.

i dont know. i have never overclocked before, but im willing to learn. i just want a chip that will be good for gaming needs with games like cod2 and fear. what kind of cooling would you need for a opteron? just a heatsink for mediocre overclocking?

i dont know how much an opteron can be overclocked, but im sure you need a good motherboard to overclock anything like that. personally i dont think you'll get any amd proc except maybe an FX series proc to 3ghz.
my 3800+ is very o/cable, actually i got it to 2.4ghz without any vcore increase. its low heat and high performance.
id prefer not to raise the voltage 1. because my psu sucks and i dont want to burn it out and 2. because i want my processors life to be longer. (a good 5 year increase on the lifespan of a computer part never did any harm! :) )
btw im sure a 3800+ can get fairly high in an overclock as well... id say a good 2.6ghz or even 2.8ghz is feasible if youre lucky.

ya, good motherboard+ (ok) ram, would help...

my computer, i'd say was meant to be overclocked,
i had everything ready, except for a cooling...
still it was good enough, cause i spent extra $50 for a new CPU fan

Maybe in the US they are, here in Australia the Opterons are significantly more expensive.
and not as well known?
They were intended (and are) a server processor, AMD markets the Athlon64/X2 as its desktop processors. At stock speeds, the X2s outperform the Opterons, but the Opterons overclock much better. The fact that fairly few people overclock explains the fact that they're not as common.

Not quite, there's also an Opteron 180, and there's no X2 4000+. So that's 5 X2s compared to 4 Opterons, not a huge difference.

A good HSF (not stock) is generally better than buget watercooling. It should be fine for moderate overclocking.

It's not unheard of, but mainly among experienced overclockers, and usually with good cooling (i'm not talking about record breaking attempts or anything). If you're lucky enough to get a good chip, though, you may very well be able to. Of course, you also need a good mobo and RAM. I'd be happy with 2.8Ghz, but remember each processor is different, and 2.6Ghz is still a very fast procesor. Since the X2 4400+ is only 2.2Ghz, getting the Opteron 170 past that is pretty much guaranteed .

i just started oc'ing my opteron 165 from 1.8ghz to 2.5ghz sooo easy without even increasing the vcore...

its my first time, but it was very smooth and it is done in 2~3hours.

People buy the X2s because when they see the opterons described at "server processors" they are scared away. When really, the opteron is just a AMD processor that is tested more, hence the better OCing. I'm loving my opty 165, brought it up to 2.3GHz (from 1.8) on stock cooling easily (I'm very cautious of my temps). I know I'll be OCing much more once I get some better cooling. If you don't OC, you'd be better off with an X2 because of the extra .2 GHz.
