would it be worth getting an opteron x2 and just OC'ing to the breaking point of my ram... or getting an athlon 64 x2 and working with that?
 
opteron x2? you mean a dual core opteron? opterons should be able to get you a higher overclock, but i think whatever's cheaper...
 
Unless you have a need for or actually have a server, there is no need to spend the extra money on a cpu meant for a server. Unless you are an enthusiast and like to buy rediculous things for your PC
 
i was actually considering an opteron as a way to save money. the 165 is $180 currently and from what i've read easily reaches 2.7-2.9ghz, while something like the 3800x2 or 4200x2 are $130 and $180(?), with smaller caches and not as much overclock-ability
 
ill try not to be rude even though im thoroughly annoyed... enough with the core2duo heckling. that, especially in this situation, has no place as a suggestion. :(
