optimal performance partition

I have an 80gb hd on my laptop, what is the best way to partition it for performance. Also, my desktop has 320 gb, what is the best. I partitioned both down the middle, one for the OS and one for all my files? Thanks for any suggestions. Oh, would it be better to just not even have a partition on my laptop?

An 80gb drive is about what most will see on a laptop to start with. If you plan to load it with softwares then a look at a larger drive or use an external for storage/backup.

In the desktop here two or three OSs run on two 500gb internal sata models since I removed an older 250gb model out of the equation there. While using the ide for Vista originally the second 500gb was strictly storage until buying an external used for that presently in order to see multiple OSs. So it depends on how you intend to use each when deciding how to lay out the partitioning theme.
