optus usb ineternet slows down computer

hi everyone, i recently formated my friends computer and installed windows xp home. he has a pentuim 3 733mhz with 256 ram. the brand of the computer is mercury, i downloaded all the relevant drivers for the computer. and everything runs fine. i installed a new optus wireless usb modem for the computer, however as soon as the internet connects the whole computer slows down, and the internet takes a long time to load web pages, almost like it was 56k, even though the modem has full reception. any ideas?
 
More ram would definately help. It's an old and slow system, having usb internet is gonna make it more slower. But like I said, more memory should help him out somewhat.
