Windows 11 OS’s on external storage

Good afternoon everyone,

I recently received an old laser engraver and would like to get it running. Only problem is that it’s latest print driver can only run up to windows 8 64 bit. I have seen many people have done VM’s with success but was advised against it due to the stresses on my computer. He recommended putting it on a thumb drive. I also have to install coreldraw x8 to complete everything.
How plausible/realistic is this to put everything on an external and run the programs off of it instead of replacing my entire OS. Am I overthinking this and x8 would run just fine on my computer. Is there a way to run a program as an older version within the newer version?
I have a laptop raider g66. I believe it has a 3070 and running windows 11. Any help or direction would be much appreciated as I have little to no experience with computers.

The best option in my opinion would be to find a cheap Windows 7 or Windows 8 PC somewhere like eBay and use that as a dedicated PC for the engraver.

However running a Windows 7 or 8 VM on your PC will not be "stressing" to the PC. It's meant to be utilized.
