OS Error?

I was messing around with two different mhz of ram and my computer completely locked up and shut down. Now the good news is this is an old p2, which I just mess around with and if I cant recover what is on the drive then it is no big deal. When I boot up the computer it recognizes the OS HD, but it will error when it starts windows.

Well, I popped the OS HD from the comp into another extra computer as the slave drive and it seems like everything is on HD. So I'm thinking it's an error is in windows somewhere. Once it loads and goes through the windows chime an illegal error message comes up.

Should I back up all my files and then just start from scratch?? Or can I just delete the windows OS files and do a fresh install on that?? Or is there a way where I can go back to a previous configuration of the OS??

Fresh install of windows. Try first. Save your files (backup) is very important.
 
So I made a back up of all my files and programs on another computer.

Then I completely reformatted the hard drive. The only problem I am running into is the computer does not recognize that the hard drive is plugged in. So my question is, can I re-hook up the hard drive as a slave drive on my other computer and install the OS from there? Or will this cause driver issues when installing the OS? The OS installed will be windows 98. And it would be installed on a computer, which is running XP on the Master drive. If this wont works, how do I get my older computer to realize that the HD is plugged in and ready to have the OS installed??
