OS for playing old games?

I recently got an old laptop from a family member, that runs XP, 512mb RAM, and around 100gb storage. (I don't know what the CPU or GPU (If it has one) it has). Most of the old games I have runs on both XP and 98. And I thought maybe I should install 98, would it work? Also, should I do it or not? Any recommendations? Any kind of feedback is appreciated :)

What kind of games are you thinking?

If the system had drivers for everything on Win98, you might be able to use that, although most super old games work OK on XP with DOSBox or using compatibility mode.

The reason I wanted to install 98 was to play even older games. So I'm talking about games from 90s and games from 2000s. But if it would work, theres no need to downgrade. Thanks for the quick reply.

98 would be good for 16-bit games. And there would also be no need to use something like DOSbox for DOS based games.
