Out board video via VGA?

My girlfriend that I've been dating for quite a long time, has a laptop that the screen has broken. She was trying to step over it and I guess her toe slightly caught the screen and damaged the internals pretty well. The screen is completely unsaleable.

It'be been verified that the video card is ok and everything. She got a quote for 400 for a new screen to replace it, and being that she only has a semester and a half to complete in the UNI to complete sees no point of dropping that much money in an older ACER laptop that she got when she graduated highschool(she is getting a new mac when she goes to grad from her dad I guess).

Anyway hooking up an external monitor(a few have been tried) yeilds that it'll pop up the windows loading screen yet after maybe 30 seconds the monitors go blank and report "no signal." So I was wondering if there was a list of commands or anything of the sort to switch to the VGA video output port, rather than the on board screen.

Thanks guys, I'm just at a loss here, I've not had much experience with laptops, or anything like these scenarios.

You should see a secondary function key on the keyboard somewhere that looks like two monitors. Pressing that will switch the laptop's display mode. You should be able to toggle through the options until you see video on the external display.

What model is this Acer laptop?
