Outlook wants McAfee

a while ago, I bought a new laptop

when it first came (from dell) it had windows xp along with office outlook and McAffee antivirus

I know from experience that McAfee sucks, so I attempted to uninstall it to install avast:)

McAffee didn't want to be removed, so I deleted the files manually. I went in after to add or remove programs and they were removed from the list

now, whenever Outlook (not express) starts, it looks for 3 of the files from McAffee, then comes up with errors when they cannot be found. There is no issues with Outlook itsself, the messages are just annoying.:mad:
 
You still have a few registry values for McAfee remaining the system registry itself. To manually track those down you would have to go through each hive in the registry itself best left for advanced users at their own risk there.

There is one retail registry tool where you specify McAfee for that to hunt down and remove all McAfee entries called Registry Crawler. But that's all it does since it lacks any automatic cleaner.

The one thing you can right away without any harm is type msconfig at the Run prompt and press enter to see the msconfig utility open up. You then check the selective startup option and go to the startup group and services tabs to look in each one for any McAfee items lingering there and simply uncheck to disable them.

When going into the services tab simply place a check mark in the "hide all microsoft services" box to avoid accidently disabling any essential services needed for Windows to run. Anything can easily be re-enabled later if you make any mistakes.

That is definitely an upgrade from the RegCleaner as far as the automatic cleaner is concerned while RegCleaner offers some more options like displaying all main keys for all non MS programs installed in the main window you see first. http://www.dewassoc.com/support/useful/regcleaner.htm

The last item to mention would be Regseeker. If you know the exact name of a registry value the next freeware will simply remove that for you without opening the regedit registry editor up. But it's only good for one reg key or even removing one driver out of the system32 folder in Windows. http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
 
If you have Outlook 2007, delete extend.dat from your %appdata% folder.

If you have a previous version you can go to Tools > Options > Other > Advanced. There you will find COM Add-ins and Add-ins Manager, where you can disable Add-ins that are giving problems.

That would probably be because the registry has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Outlook is looking for the Mcafee plugins for email virus scanning.. Those are in the add-in manager.
