Over doing it?

I bought Crysis today and played for 30 minutes, and its awesome XD! I couldn't play it at very high settings though, because then the game would lag (when I set AA to 16xq ).

I touched the backplate of my GTS 250 and it was surprisingly hot. I checked the temp and it was around 50C (not over). My CPU temp was around 40C. I know these aren't dangerous heat (at least I'm sure for the CPU), but the CPU won't stay below 30 like it usually would; it's bouncing from 30 to 34.

So my question is, was I over doing it? Or when will I know I'm over doing it (besides when the computer catches on fire)?. Also, whats the highest temperature the GPU can get to and still be able? I want to max out the game as much as I can without having my computer break down or something. Thanks in advance for replying!

What CPU do you have, what heatsink is on it, have you ever reaplied thermal paste.

No, you weren't over doing it, 70+ degrees would be over doing it.

You will know when you are doing it because you will notice that the frame rates will drop, the temperatures will be really high, 70-80+ degrees and you may smell what is like burning or melting plastic.

Your GPU will, like all components in a computer, get to 105 degrees, then you are looking at massive failings, like bust chips, circuitry etc. All components in your system, from the parts in the PSU to the parts in the hard drive, have a maximum temperature of 105 degrees celcius. Your system will normally shut itself down at around 100 degrees.

As to what you said about it catching fire, i'm guessing that you are being hypothetical, but just to keep you safe in your mind, your system will never ever catch fire, i will promise you, unless you plan on putting a massive current in or putting a lit match in there, it will always be fine because it has so many safety features to prevent hardware damage

You are fine, 50c is a solid temp for that card, you would even be fine if it was at 85c, from my past experiences nvidia cards can handle some serious heat.:) but anyway your fine dude nothing to worry about.
I bet the max temp for that card is around 90c or so.
