Over the top with MS WORD

I am building an MS Word file which includes lots of high resolution neg scans. Now around 560,000kb and I get the message re cannot display pictures because of disc or memory limitations. I have a 250G h/d & 1G memory HP Pavilion a1123c m/c). I can see there probably would be a limit, so what do people do in this circumstance?
What steps can I take to continue building this file and saving it - is there an easy solution known to all except me? Perhaps I should not be using Word at all, except I am comfortable with it so want to stick with it if I can.
Thanks

i think a file that size is pushing the limits of msword is capable of, if you have that many images should you not be using something like adobe photoshop and create an album. the reason the file size is so big is that word isn't designed primarily for this sort of work.
also, if you intend printing these images i think the quality may suffer because of microsoft word

yeah, microsoft word is mainly for writing and its sole duty is for that.. it wasn't mean to keep and maintain large quality images. it would be best if you can save it in seperate files as elmarcorulz stated. you might want to try maybe powerpoint? its picture capabilities are somewhat better and you can write also.
