AMD Opteron 246 2.0 GHz Socket 940 ($300)

-->overclocked to 2.6 gh

-------VS-------

fx-55 2.6gh ($999) socket 939
--> non overclocked.

I don't know much about opteron, so here i am, asking whats better.

well, to be honest I don't want to spend over $500 on a cpu for my new computer.

if you know of any processor that you might want to recommand me,
please tell me.

by the way, i don't know the difference between socket 939 and 940,
opteron seems like its socket 940, and fx series are socket 939 ??

also I am considering of buying this motherboard,

this motherboard will match my ati video card "Radeon X850 XT Platinum"

Not all Opty's are s939. For overclocking and general use like gaming an stuff, a s939 Opteron will be fine, you see more s940's in servers.

s939 opteron's are just re-badge sandiego's from what i've read. they have the overclocking strength of the Venice's, but the larger cache of the SanDiego's. I'd personally get a Opteron 146 (s939) if i had the money. If you can spend more go for it, but if you're looking for good overclocking and alot of accesible information to help you out stay away from s940 Opteron's.

EDIT: have a look here. http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=M&Category_Code=AMDOP

do you think getting that opteron 146 might be even better than fx-55?

+i thought opteron 246 was the better one than opteron 146...

Depends, overclocked you could get FX-55 performance. It just depends on how good of an overclock you achieved, and what th FX-55 was running at. Personaly, the FX series is way over-hyped I think. They are extremely expensive, you could by a chip at half the price and overclock it for the same experience.

Your main differences between the 246 adn 146 are of course socket. You have a wider variety of boards in s939 world I think, and overclocking will probably be easier.

The 246 also is based on 0.13 microns, the 146 is .09 micron. Generally speaking, the smaller the better, so .09 should be faster.

The 146 will run cooler than the 246 because of an almost 10watt power difference, this helps in overclocking.

And of course the 146 is 1000/2000 HT bus speed, an the 246 is 800/1600 HT bus speed. The numbers can be tricky though, as your comparin 2 different sockets.

You make the decision ultimately, there are more differences, and someone else can probably desscribe them better than I can. Google.com has alo of good info on both.

I agree the FX series is well over priced. A substantial amount of the is spent on the unlocked mutliplier feature (which most owners neither use nor know of). They do overclock very well howver.

Otherwise i concur with 4w4k3
