would anyone recommend overclocking an evga 7900gt card? can you oc enough on those to make a difference in games such as fear or half life 2 episode one? if so, what is a good program for it?

Dont bother man. Thats a good enough gfx card. Even if you were to overclock it, i doubt you would see any distinct difference in game play. MAYBE your fps will shot a up a few points but the real question is.....

Is it worth frying your gfx card for a few extra fps?

Overclocking your video card and CPU together can make a pretty drastic improvement actually. When I overclocked my CPU and video card, I gained several thousand points in 3DMark, as well as a noticeable improvement in games , FPS wise. I would only bother overclocking it if you're unsatisfied with the settings and frame rates you get now.

well, obviously if you clock your cpu too, then you'll see some improvment but if you planning on clocking the gfx card only, i wouldnt risk it.

i dont understand this overclocking fetish with people. I understand if you have a shitty comp and your trying to squeeze some extra juice from it, but most people go and buy some really good part just to overclock them. Most software doesnt require more thern 128mb of ram lol.

And if your into games, then get yourself a good mobo, cpu and gfx card. Why bother running the risk of frying? Alot of people dont have enough experiance to know wtf they doin anyways and ruin perfectly functionable hardware.

Theres really no harm in overclocking your video card. The worst that will happen is you will clock it too high, causing your system to hang and then restart, but it will be back to normal after.

I, as well as others probably feel that by overclocking your saving money. Instead of say, buying an Athlon 64 3800+, you can buy a 3000+ and OC it to the 3800+ speed, thereby saving money.

hahaha, Omega, yea, looking at it that way, ofcourse you save money. But not every person thinks like that. Somone will go buy the 3800 and try to OC it.

If you go with the mind set to buy a cheap part and OC it to make it better, then sure, enjoy.

If you go with mind set to buy high quality hardware top OC it afterward is just retarded in my opinion...

Why, your opinions are a bit strange if you ask me.... surely your saving money either way, just on the first one your saving short term, the second one you are saving long term.... both ways though, the bottom line is, through overclocking you ARE saving money.... and with no REAL threat (as long as you have a basic idea at least) there is no harm

Well, saving money in the long run is great but i dont think your really saving money when your over clocking high end hardware. Even if you know alil somthing about over clocking. The fact that you spend a lot of doe to buy that part just to OC it is to risky if ya ask me. But im poor. what do i know. lol.

But like i said, most people dont have a clue when it comes to OCing. Lets leave the world of computerforums.com and enter the world of stupid people who dont know squat about computers.

i have an eVGA 7900 GT KO and i over clocked it from

500/750

to

550/808 and it works fine

im getting perfect results in HL2EO with everything on high

huh? my 3400 runs at 2.4ghz stock. 3800's have to oc for 2.4ghz?

the 7900gt only overclocks a little off the bat, maybe to 550mhz. I have mine voltmodded and now it runs 100% fine at 650mhz and i noticed a huge difference. Do the volt mod. It is the biggest money saver. It's almost like i have a 7900gtx.
