Overclocking AMD 64 3400+

Hello, i am interested in getting more from my computer and have tweaked overclocking in the past but i woundered what recommendations you had for overclocking the graphics card, cpu etc in bios.

I have:

OS : Windows XP Professional
CPU : AMD Athlon 64 3400 +
Ram : 512 DDRMB
Motherboard : Soltek
Graphics Card : 256MB ATI Radeon X800 Pro (Sapphire)

Standard fans, no water coolers or express fans.

I know this is of no help but Y in the H E double hockey sticks would you want to overclock a speedy processer like that? :-).
 
To make it even more faster.....lol. so your saying theres no point in overclocking it?

I do sort of understand the quest for speed and the need for some to overclock :-).. I myself am a speed freak! :-). you only really notice the difference when you run benchmarks and of course this is also depending on how far you push the overclock. I personaly though wouldn't want to take a very fast and somewhat expensive CPU and push so soon, it's plenty fast enough as it is. I usualy attempt to overclock after a couple of years to get a little more life out of it b4 that upgrade.

If you notice I've got the same cpu and there's just nothing that stresses my system that I've stumble across. And remember the 64 3400+ is the FX-51 cpu killer :-)..

Your best option is to try and OC the memory ... to compensate for lack of DC contoller :)

i think he might mean "Dual Channel", could be wrong though. I don't know who said "you won't notice a difference" but i totally disagree, there will be a difference if you get a 50mhz overclock. It just takes benching, game play to show you how it improved (score/fps will go up, time taking to load will go down.) Just make sure you have enough cooling to take the overclock.

Only for the processor and other stuff tho. Its very widely known memory cooling doesnt add that much to memory performance (barely 1-2%) :)

Well alrighty then :-).. If your going to overclock read and read and read some more make sure you know how it's done and Y you have to do certain things a certain way.

Honestly though your taking a computer that can run any game out at the moment PERFECTLY and making them run better? :-) Just my two cents.

it doesnt run perfectly tho, i get spiking on doom 3 and playing call of duty online my ping will go to 999 for a few seconds then it will go ok. it does this quite frequently.
 
and what do they do? can I get hold of them or something?

They allow your DDR banks to run in interleave mode :) You get them by either getting a mobo with a dual channel setup or you get a Socket939/Socket940 processor.

And as far as spiking on doom3 You'll have to be a bit more elaborate.. Do you mean ping here also? if so then as praetor said "Ping isnt a measure of system performance"

Radeon X800Pro is a great card but you may find it more beneficial to overclock your Video card and as praetor said your memory although I think you'll benefit most from your video. The fact that the 64 3400+ doesn't have a duel memory controller doesn't really make a world of difference and I'd say very little... The fact that it has a on cpu memory controller some what makes up for the lack of duel memory support.

Oh ya and as far as risk goes, there's always a risk when overclocking but the difference is made by how much we know :-).. If you dont know how or have doubts and or questions then make sure you've got a complete understanding b4 attempting any overclock... In the end you might just be kicking yourself in the ass because you took a perfectly fine Processer and burned it out.

Not to mention that d3 performance varies a lot depending on the level and the activity etc
 
Well spiking on doom 3 is basically all the time during single playing, even with slower settings.

As for Call of duty online my ping is fine but it freezes.

I'm not sure what you mean by spikeing :-).. I think of spikeing as when your online and your ping jumps.

Well now that your going to try the 64 bit OS hopefully things will work better for you :-).. Do us a favor and post back and let us know how you like gaming inside the 64 bit windows xp.

I'd imaging it's not going to be an improvement at all but I'll keep my fingers crossed 4 ya.
