overclocking an amd 64 3000+

i am running an amd 64 3000+ on an asus k8n motherboard, and i can overclock my processor 1% and have it run stable. it will run if i oc it at 3-5% and still run around 35C but when i play a game, say doom 3, my computer will just all of a sudden reboot. if its not overheating then could it be a bad OC? and how would i fix it so i could OC it more?

If you are certain it is not the CPU overheating then it is most probably a voltage problem. If possible (in your BIOS) increae the vCore to the CPU. not too much, say an increase of 0.2 volts. overclock the same amount as you did before and go and run the game. See what happens.

i cant change my vcore in my bios. it wont let me. but it is running at about 1.53 volts. what else should i do?

the only other way to increase the cpu's vcore is a complicated voltage mod. These require micro-soldering and several different resistors to be physically added to the motherboard. What is the exact motherboard make and model and i will have a look around to see if there are any tutorials.

There might be another solution, the dreaded bios flash :P

true, but it sounds as if the hardware (voltage regulator) is holding this one back, so a mod would be the only way to change it.

so a mod would be the only way to change it.
could be a jumper based voltage.

0.2 is way too much to increase at once. You should increase in the minimum steps available so on a board that allowed vcore changes something like 0.05v per increase. Obviously this does not apply since he cant increase vcore anyway :D

If it were a vcore issue i would expect to see crashes rather than restarts, sound psu related.

i had a look on asus web site who state
AI Overclocking
ASUS K8N offers robust overclocking options to maximize your system performance.
-- SFS (Stepless Frequency Selection) from 200MHz up to 300MHz at 1MHz increment
-- CPU, Memory and AGP voltage adjustable
-- ASUS C.P.R.(CPU Parameter Recall)

so vcore adjustment should be in your bios somewhere

Absoltuely but if i recall (and i could be getting my models mixed up), the K8N doesnt have functional locks so you'll run into a really low OC ceiling anyways
