overclocking and it's value

so i was wondering with all of the core 2 duos out and all the new games out, exactly what benefit (besides mental satisfaction) does one get by overclocking their processor? i feel like the current processors, at stock speeds, run pretty much any new games out flawlessly and the games don't require more processor. is that incorrect?

i feel like a lot of people OC to get a high 3dmark score or just to say "i got my e8400 to 4.3ghz," but i am stretching to find an actual application of the added speed in daily use. i think it's great that these processors OC so well, but for me it makes more sense to OC them in a year when they are outdated and new games require more processor. OC'ing is the only way to keep up if you aren't willing to buy new components at that point.

anyone care to share their thoughts?

Some people do it for benchmarking, others for bragging rights, some just because they can, others as a hobby, for more FPS in games or for faster applications, like multitasking or encoding, or a bit of everything.

Overclocking is PRO

ya everything tylor said is correct. one more reason people (like me) OC is because they buy a slower less expensive CPU and OC it so it can run up to par with a much more expensive one. you can save a lot of money that way

I have a e4500 fpr example. It runs at 2.2ghz. Not bad, but not too good. I could have spent an extra $200 for a 3.0ghz C2D, but if mine can overclock stable to 3.0ghz, why spend? I'm a n00b so I need to be careful, but it's best for budget gamers...
